Field Engineering Program
Assignments
The Field Engineering Program offers challenging assignments in a variety of naval and commercial shipyards and the Naval Reactors Facility (NRF) in Idaho. It is a program for engineers with at least two years' engineering experience at KAPL. Program participants work directly with government, Navy and shipyard personnel to provide on-site technical assistance and oversight of all aspects of submarine and aircraft carrier construction, test, maintenance, inactivation and disposal activities.
Education
The program begins with a rigorous and comprehensive qualification program at KAPL where the candidate learns the detailed design basis for a specific reactor plant. This broad knowledge base encompasses nuclear reactor design, thermodynamics, reactor control and protection, reactor plant operations, mechanical and electrical systems design and operation, reactor and steam plant chemistry control, and radiological controls. Following qualification, participants transfer to a Reactor Plant Contractors' Office (RPCO) for a three- to five-year assignment where they assume responsibility for increasingly complex construction/maintenance activities in a dynamic, production environment.
Experience
A RPCO assisnment is not a desk job and requires a significant "deck-plate" presence to ensure success. In this assignment the program participant can expect to continually develop multi-disciplinary technical and system integration skills as well as leadership and management abilities. The experience and skills gained in the Field Engineering Program provide a solid foundation from which to launch a successful career in a wide variety of disciplines within KAPL.
